Bible verses about protection

Passages about protection are among the most loved and the most misused in the Bible. Psalm 91 in particular is sometimes quoted as though it were a guarantee against harm.
It is worth being honest about this. Many of the people who wrote and first sang these psalms went on to experience danger, illness and loss. Christian traditions read that tension in different ways, and this site does not take a position on which reading is correct.
What the passages consistently do is use the language of shelter and refuge. They are offered here in that spirit, with their context available alongside.

1He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”
