Faith in the Bible is often smaller and more contested than the word suggests in ordinary use. A man asks for help with his unbelief in the same breath as professing belief. Thomas wants evidence. Hebrews lists people who died without receiving what they had been waiting for.
How faith relates to works, to assurance and to salvation is one of the most significant points of difference between Christian traditions. This page does not take a position on it.

Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.
