How verses are chosen and reviewed
A verse site is easy to build badly. This page sets out what is done here and why, so the parts that matter can be checked rather than assumed.

Where the text comes from
Every verse displayed here is read from a stored copy of a published translation. That copy was downloaded once from its publisher, checked against the publisher’s own structure, and committed to this site’s repository along with a SHA-256 checksum of the source file. The checksum is published on the translations page.
No verse text is generated, paraphrased, modernised, re-punctuated or combined between translations. The import script fails loudly rather than silently dropping a line it cannot parse, and a validation step walks every verse of every enabled translation before any deployment.
No language model writes, edits, selects or ranks any Scripture text on this site. That is a deliberate architectural decision, not a preference.
How topic lists are built
Every passage on every topic page was placed there by hand and is stored in version control. Nothing is classified automatically, and no assignment is computed at request time.
Each topic carries a published selection note explaining the criteria used, which appears on the page itself rather than being kept internal. Several notes record deliberate exclusions — the parenting page explains why certain proverbs about discipline are not listed, and the financial difficulty page explains why passages commonly used to promise financial return are not listed either.
Passages that are frequently misapplied are included with a standing caution rather than being quietly dropped. Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:28 and Philippians 4:13 are all present, each with a note about the setting they are usually quoted without.
What random selection draws from
Random verses and the verse of the day come from a curated pool of 200 passages, not from all 31,098 verses. A uniform draw across the whole Bible regularly produces genealogical fragments, half-clauses and isolated commands whose original setting is doing essential work.
Excluding a passage from that pool does not hide it. The complete text of both translations remains available through book browsing and search. The selection rules in detail.
Scripture and commentary
Editorial notes are always in a different typeface, at a different size, in a different colour and in a separate labelled block from Scripture. They are headed “Context note” rather than “What this verse means”, and they describe placement and audience rather than asserting an interpretation.
Where Christian traditions read a passage differently, the note says so and stops. This site does not adjudicate between traditions, and it is not branded to any denomination.
Related passages
Related passages come from two sources: explicit curated links (parallel Gospel accounts, direct quotations of one part of the Bible by another, immediate context), and shared membership of a curated topic. Both are recorded human judgements.
Nothing is related on the basis of vector similarity or model output. “These two verses use similar words” is not a good enough reason to tell a reader they are connected.
What this site will not say
- That a randomly surfaced verse is a personal message, an answer, or an instruction about a decision you are facing.
- That any passage constitutes medical, mental health, financial or legal advice.
- That a difficult feeling, an illness, a bereavement, a trauma or an experience of abuse reflects a failure of faith.
- That one disputed theological interpretation is universally correct.
- That anything on this site substitutes for professional care, emergency support, safeguarding services or pastoral care from someone who knows you.
- That any passage predicts a future event, including current affairs.
Corrections
Reader reports never alter published Scripture or curation directly. They go into a queue for a person to review; any resulting change is made in version control, validated and deployed like any other change.
If you have found an error — a wrong reference, an inaccurate quotation, an attribution problem, or a passage that does not belong on the page it is on — please report it. Reports about text accuracy are treated as urgent.
Sensitive subjects
Pages that touch bereavement, illness, financial hardship, conflict or distress open with practical support information, above the passages rather than below them.
Pages dealing specifically with self-harm, suicide, abuse or immediate danger are not published. Doing them properly requires review that this site has not yet had, and a verse list is a poor substitute for a crisis service. Where a reader may be in that situation, the site points to real support instead.
