The Psalms are a collection of 150 songs and prayers written over a long period and gathered into five books. They cover far more ground than praise: roughly a third are laments, several are angry, and a number end without resolution.
The passages offered here reflect that range rather than only the comforting ones. Where a psalm’s superscription (“A Psalm by David”, “For the Chief Musician”) is part of the first verse in this translation, it appears as it does in the source text; it has not been trimmed.
