Proverbs presents its sayings as general observations about how life usually goes, not as promises about how it always goes. The book of Job exists in part to make that point, and Ecclesiastes presses it further.
That distinction matters in practice. Read as guarantees, several of the best-known proverbs place an unfair weight on people whose lives did not follow the pattern — parents, in particular. Read as observations, they are a good deal more useful.
One editorial decision worth stating: the sayings about disciplining children that are often quoted in support of physical punishment are not included in this selection.
