Comfort is one of the oldest reasons people open the Bible. The passages here come mostly from the Psalms, the prophets and the New Testament letters — three parts of the Bible where distress is described rather than tidied away.

None of these passages promises that difficulty will end quickly. Several were written by people in the middle of loss, exile or imprisonment. That context is worth holding on to: they read differently as words from inside trouble than as words shouted from outside it.
