Bible verses for illness
Last reviewed
This page needs a plain statement at the top. Nothing here is medical advice, nothing here should be read as a reason to delay or decline treatment, and nothing here suggests that illness is a verdict on anyone's faith.
That last point matters, because the Bible itself pushes back on it. The book of Job exists largely to dismantle the idea that suffering is proportional to fault, and the Gospels record the same assumption being raised and rejected.
With that said, people have read Scripture during illness for a very long time, and the passages below are among those most often turned to.

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.
2Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, 3who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases, 4who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies,
2Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am faint. LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled. 3My soul is also in great anguish. But you, LORD—how long? 4Return, LORD. Deliver my soul, and save me for your loving kindness’ sake.
He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
14Is any amongst you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
“Come to me, all you who labour and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
