Selected passages from 1 John
Passages from this book that have been reviewed as reading clearly on their own.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love. 19We love him, because he first loved us.
7Beloved, let’s love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.
Reading a whole book
Chapter and verse numbers were added centuries after these texts were written, and they occasionally fall in awkward places. If a chapter seems to begin mid-thought, it may well be doing exactly that — reading the end of the previous chapter usually resolves it.
